Jobs Not Cops

The Rally

On the anniversary of the Rodney King riots and 23 years after the release of the film “Boyz n the Hood,” director-producer John Singleton and organizer/ex gang member Marquis “Chu” Estes are coming full circle calling all ex-offenders, at-risk youth, students, gang intervention, youth groups, mothers of victims, artists and elected officials across Los Angeles to rally in support of our community by registering 20,000 new voters to vote in the upcoming LA mayoral election.

The Mission

  • Honoring those unsung heroes that made it possible to vote
  • We will take responsibility for registering those who can vote
  • We will register ex-felons who don’t know they can vote
  • We will voice our disapproval of Wendy Greuel’s proposal to add 2000 police officers on our streets.

Why is the rally dubbed “#Jobs Not Cops”?

“In terms of options and resources, we’re at the end of the road but we’re also at the beginning of real progress. There’s no turning back. It’s now or never. If we want to complete the job in a holistic way, voting is the only option we have left. We don’t need 2,000 cops harassing the community, we need jobs.” said Organizer Chu.

The rally will also be tied into a Peace Ride, “United For Peace”, led by Power 106’s Big Boy, Minister Tony Muhammad and Rev. Alfreddie Johnson they will accompany over 500 motorcycle bikers to the rally as a show of solidarity and support. Minister Tony Muhammad says, “We can’t arrest this problem. The problem must be solved through reeducation, retraining and social programs. We need to be restored.”

#Jobs Not Cops will include speakers, a Hip Hop concert, celebrity basketball game, DJ Mash Up and awards. Under the supervision of Director John Singleton 20 students from USC will film the #Jobs Not Cops Rally.
